Return to G9

In its session on December 14, 2017, the Schleswig-Holstein state parliament set the course for a comprehensive reintroduction of nine years of grammar school-based schooling with the amendment to the School Act.

The reform was introduced for grades 5 and 6 in 2019/2020.

This means that for all children in Schleswig-Holstein who switch to the grammar school in the 2018/2019 school year, the special rule applies that after one year of G8 in grade 5, they switch to G9 in grade 6.

This one-year transition period is mainly due to organisational and administrative measures associated with the return to G9.
